ARE YOU A FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT SEEKING A SUPPORT SYSTEM TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE COLLEGE? THE FIRST GEN FLYERS MENTORING PROGRAM IS HERE FOR YOU!

Being the first person in your family to go to college is a unique experience filled with many moments of celebration and also some moments of challenge! The First Gen Flyers Mentoring Program at Lewis is a small community of first-generation students, who share their experiences, celebrate their accomplishments, and support one another.


WHAT IS A FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT?

First-generation students are defined by É«ÖÐÉ« as students whose parents have not completed a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING THE FIRST GEN FLYERS MENTORING PROGRAM?

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Build on strengths while expanding knowledge and experience with ongoing programming and mentorship.
  • Celebrate achievements and first-generation identity at various fun and engaging campus events and annual celebration. Previous Events Hosted: Paint Day, Movie Nights, Trivia, Games and more!
  • Connect with other first-generation students and build relationships with first-generation faculty and staff.
  • Access resources & workshops to strengthen your talents and help overcome challenges.

HOW CAN I JOIN?

To participate in the First Gen Flyers Mentoring Program, you must be an incoming first-year who is a first-generation college student. Students will receive an email invite after attending New Flyer Registration Days to join the program. Interested students must submit an essay response to the following question by Friday, August 11:

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE THE FIRST IN YOUR FAMILY TO GO TO COLLEGE?

Please limit your response to 500 words or less.

Students participating in the First Gen Flyers Mentoring Program are required to attend and actively participate in all First Gen Flyers gatherings and meetings. Space in the program is limited. Interested students should submit the essay response as early possible.
