University Reminds Community of Weather Protocol

University Reminds Community of Weather Protocol

Published: January 8, 2024.

As the Chicago area anticipates its first measurable snowfall this week, we would like to share information about the process for adjusting hours of operation due to inclement weather.

The safety of the campus community is our top priority. When severe weather is forecasted, Campus Emergency Planning Team members analyze the following:

  1. Forecast
  2. Road conditions
  3. Campus conditions
  4. Status of other area schools

Every effort is made to remain open and not interrupt campus operations. However, sometimes there are weather conditions that may require a delay in the opening of campus, an early closing, or cancelation of classes and activities. In certain circumstances, we might transition to online classes, remote work, or activities while the unsafe weather conditions persist.

Efforts will be made to communicate the decision to delay, close, or transition online as soon as possible. When the decision is made to delay, cancel, or transition classes, the following notification takes place:

  1. The É«ÖÐÉ« Emergency Notification System (Rave Alerts) delivers information to your email and phone
  2. Website posting on
  3. Radio/TV stations are notified

To ensure that you receive alerts sent to the É«ÖÐÉ« community via voice, email, and text messages of weather closing and emergencies, please take the time now to update your contact information in the MyLewis portal. Visit /emergencyplanning for instructions on how to update your information.
